Paralympics New Zealand

New Zealand’s two-time Paralympian Jessica Hamill has won BRONZE on September 14th in the Women's Shot Put F34 with a throw of 7.54m, with Lijuan Zou (China) winning gold with new world record throw of 8.75m.

Hamill brought her experience from the Beijing 2008 Paralympics to the stadium tonight when she made her mark on the competition by with her best throw of 7.54m coming in the first attempt. This put her in medal contention and she stayed there for the duration of the competition.

It was this win that has set the tone, as the New Zealand Paralympic Team concluded Day 7 of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. At close of play yesterday, total medals numbered 16 – 8 GOLD, 5 SILVER and 3 BRONZE. The exceptional results to date took New Zealand into 6th place overnight on the medal table, jumping over Australia in 7th place, and taking 1st place on the medals per capita table. Today, Australia has shot back up the medal table but currently, New Zealand is still inside the top 10.

A big highlight of Day 7 so far has been the success of Scott Martlew at Lagoa this morning, making the final of the Men’s KL3 Para-Canoe event, after being called up to the New Zealand Paralympic team only two weeks ago following the Russian suspension. Martlew placed 4th in his heat of the Men’s KL3 sending him to the semi-final. Only one hour later Martlew was on the water for the semi-final. The strong head wind did not seem to faze him as he crossed the finish line in 4th place going all the way to his first ever Paralympic final. His time of 44:28.4 was only 1.4 seconds behind the winner.

Liam Malone was once again on the track cruising to a second place in his heat and easily qualifying for tomorrow night’s Men’s 200m T44 final. Malone, who favours the 400m distance, is hoping to add another medal to his 100m silver and 200m gold.

Jessica Hamill – has competed in Para-Athletics including shotput, discus and javelin since the age of 15 and has competed in international competitions since 2006. Jessica took a break from competing in Para-Athletics in 2012, returning in 2015 with a renewed drive and passion. That same year she won a silver medal in Women’s Shot Put F34 at the IPC Athletics World Championships.
