Teenagers talent to the fore at North island BMX Championships

Talented teens Rebecca Petch and junior world champion Maynard Peel upset senior rivals to claim the North Island BMX elite titles in Cambridge.

Petch, from the Te Awamutu club, beat off the challenges from high performance squad rider Hannah Sarten and Auckland’s Zoe Fleming, just back from competing at the UCI World Cup in USA, to win the elite women’s honours.



Peel, from the Sunset Coast club, was in excellent form to hold off the challenges from North Harbour’s Michael Bias, who competed in the world championship elites for the first time this year, and Liam Perry.
The other major focus at the championship was the hosting of the annual Mighty 11s trans-Tasman clash against Australia.

The New Zealand female team won the first day 67-50 and were dominant on the second day 46-32 to retain the trophy 113-83.

The New Zealand team, led by world champion Leila Walker (Cambridge), included World No 4 Brooke Penny (Te Awamutu) along with Caitlin Flavell (Rotorua) and Elliot Kale (Tauranga).

The male team won first day 78-39 and held on to edge Australia 49-43 on day two to wrest the trophy from the visitors.

The team comprised World No 2 Jack Greenough, Tipene Kennedy (Kapiti), Maui Morrison (Cambridge) and Tyler Cotterill (East City).

Some of the world stars were also on show in the Challenge (age group) divisions led by World champion Cailen Calkin (Hamilton) who won the 15 years title.

It was a successful day in the Greenough household with Jack leading the Mighty 11s win, world No 3 Lily winning the nine years girls and Bennett claiming the 13 years honours ahead of World No 3 Cooper Merito.

It was not all about the young riders, with the ever-present Dave Mohi (Rotorua), amulti New Zealand and world championship medallist, winning the 40 years plus division.
