No Gear, No Idea...

Girl does “something crazy for a good reason”.

“I’m not a cyclist. I don’t own a bike. I have never attended a spinning class. I’ve never long distance
cycled. However, I want to do something virtually impossible, push myself to the edge, to prove that
great things can be achieved with the support of others”.

Louise Bailey is cycling the length of the North Island, alone, to raise funds for St John and CanTeen, New Zealand charities.



“The fundraiser No Gear, No Idea came about as an idea simply to ‘give back’ something to the local communities. Growing up in a small town, I love getting to know people, and building relationships – St John and CanTeen are the backbone of New Zealand, they’re there when NZ needs them most, and being non-government funded means they are as reliant on us, as we are of them. I wanted to highlight the great work they do, and help them continue to do so, through the support of the fundraiser. “

St John cover 97% of New Zealand and attend to over 1100 emergency calls every day – Their help is crucial, and yet they’re not government funded – They’re a charity supported by fundraisers such as this, and they simply could not save the life’s they do without our support.

“Having no cycling experience means that I’m completely reliant upon cycling enthusiasts, cycle clubs, stores, and experts for advice on equipment, training and routes. I’m learning so much already, but it’s definitely a gigantic challenge I’ve set myself!

The premise for No Gear, No Idea is that every item will be donated – Small pieces of the jigsaw put
together to make the big picture happen. All items are then donated to charity to raise money further.
So it’s a win/win for supporters – They make the cycle a possibility, but also contribute to the saving
of life’s. “

The cycle takes place on 3rd December from Cape Reinga and will reach an end at Cape Palliser on 17t
December. Currently busy with training and fundraising, Louise would really appreciate any support or words of advice.
