Event: Wattie’s Can’s Film Festival
When: Wednesday 12 November 2014
Where: EVENT Cinemas, Hoyts Cinemas, Reading Cinemas and independent cinemas nationwide

The Wattie’s Can’s Film Festival is back for the 21st time to help Kiwis in need by collecting cans of food for Salvation Army food banks nationwide.

From early November Kiwis throughout the country will be able to swap any can of food for a movie ticket. Wattie’s will then match every can donated with one of their own and all cans will go to The Salvation Army.

The festival is one of New Zealand’s longest running charity partnerships and Wattie’s is proud to have helped keep The Salvation Army’s food banks well stocked for over two decades.

“In the last year 55,425 food parcels were distributed by The Salvation Army to Kiwis in need. Without the support of Wattie’s and the generosity of New Zealanders over  the past 20 years we would struggle to meet the increased demand we’ve seen for our food parcels since the recession,” says Major Pamela Waugh, The Salvation Army’s Secretary for Social Services.

Since the inaugural festival in 1994, more than a million cans have been donated through the festival. Last year, a total of 41,882 cans were collected and it is hoped that there will be even more cans received in 2014.

“Christmas is an extremely difficult time for many families so food donations received through the Wattie’s Can’s Film Festival make a real difference to New Zealanders when they need it the most,” says Major Waugh.

“The Wattie’s Can’s Film Festival is a great way for Kiwis to show their support for their communities. For the price of a can of food – you can see a movie and feel good about it,” says Major Waugh.

EVENT Cinemas, Hoyts Cinemas and Reading Cinemas, are once again generously offering their theatres for the night, along with independent cinemas nationwide. This year, the festival will run at approximately 40 locations.

More details will be coming soon. But for now, save the date – Wednesday 12 November – for a night of fun and entertainment for all the family, and a chance to lend a hand to those who need it the most!
