Tomorrow opening round of the new Trust House North Island Cycling Series in the Wairarapa will see the return of one of New Zealand’s best.

Ex Olympian Gary Anderson riding for the Velo Ronny's Trek cycling team is one of the top riders entered in the 127 strong field in the masters race.

Gary Anderson’s place in the history of New Zealand cycling is undeniable
he was the first New Zealand cyclist to win an Olympic medal. Anderson claimed the bronze medal in the 4000m individual pursuit at Barcelona in 1992.

Amazingly Anderson, who even besides his Olympic triumph enjoyed a stellar career, rode while suffering from a heart defect. His heart was prone to race when placed under stress. On the surface, therefore, being an international cyclist did not seem the most suitable of pursuits, but Anderson seemed to manage just fine.

Anderson was sensational at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games, winning three gold medals – in the individual pursuit, 10-mile scratch race and team pursuit. He added a silver in the kilometre time trial and was given the honour of carrying the New Zealand flag at the closing ceremony.

To many in tomorrow’s race riding alongside Gary will be a privilege and a great experience. For Gary to come out and compete on the road against some very classic bike riders is also a challenge but he is a champion and many riders should take a good look at him at the start line before he disappeared up the road.” Said race director Jorge Sandoval.

Race one is on Saturday 20th September, elite riders will complete five laps, master and women’s three laps of a 30km circuit in the Gladstone area as from 10.00am.
