Yunca Junior Tour finishes strongly despite weather challenges

6 October 2014, 11:42AM

Snow in the Te Tipua area challenged organisers of the Yunca Junior Tour, forcing them to cancel both stages four and five on Saturday.  A plan to move a stage to the Teretonga Park Raceway was also abandoned due to high winds. Despite this the event continued on, with racing the inner city criterium, before the final stage on the Grove Bush-Springhills circuit, to crown Nick Kergozou and Hannah Gumley.

Kergozou (3:10:52) won the general classification, sprint and king of the mountain categories in the under-19 grade of the Yunca-sponsored, three-day race. He then won the final stage from Cameron Ford by three seconds and third-placed Jack Marryatt, to extend his overall lead over Maryatt to 38 seconds.

In the under-19 girls' category, Hannah Gumley (2:21:30) finished with stage winner Jess Kikstra on the final stage, to win the  overall title by one second from Kikstra, with Olivia Podmore third.

Christine Lambley claimed overall honours in the under-17 girls category by nine seconds from Rose Marshall-Lee, with Mikayla Harvey, winner of  the final stage, in third.

Joshua Smith (3:10:43) won the overall honours in the under-17 boys' and took out the final stage. James Fouche came in second overall with Chris Denholm in third.

Hamish Keast (2:06:06) won the under-15 boys' race by 2min 21sec from Corbin Strong, with Rebecca Gumbley (2:05:48) winning the girls' race from Claire Winterbourne by eight seconds with Phoebe Young in third.

The under-13 boys' category was won by Connor Leov and and girls' by Caitlin Titheridge.
