New Zealand Cup and Show Week is now less than a month away and, as well as all the favourites, two exciting new events have been added to this year’s line-up.

Christchurch City Council Events Development Manager Richard Attwood says 8–15 November promises to deliver all the racing, fashion, entertainment and family fun that makes New Zealand Cup and Show Week the country’s biggest and most vibrant spring festival.

“This is a wonderful time for Cantabrians and out-of-town visitors to celebrate how creative and exciting Christchurch has become. We have a full week of events guaranteed to get everyone out and about,” Mr Attwood says.

The newest event in this year’s line-up is the New Zealand Professional Bull Riders Cup. On 13 November, 22 elite bull riders from around the world will compete in an adrenalin-pumping, man-versus-beast sporting event like no other.

Also making its debut this year is the New Zealand Hat and Hair Art Awards, an event that celebrates the creative brilliance of NZ’s leading hat and hair artists. On 8 November, radical headwear and hairstyles will hit the catwalk and compete to win prizes and prestige.

Mr Attwood says, like many people, Christchurch will be getting dressed-up for the week-long festival and anticipation is already building.

“With so many new hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions now open in the city, we’re rolling out the welcome mat for visitors from around the country. Look out for special New Zealand Cup and Show Week signage all over town,” he says.

Sothys New Zealand 2000 Guineas Day at Riccarton Park racecourse marks the official start of the New Zealand Cup and Show Week racing action on Saturday 8 November.

Then on Monday 10 November, the Cardboard Cathedral will be transformed for Christchurch’s second Fashion for a Cure event. Top New Zealand fashion designers Trelise Cooper, Andrea Moore, Storm, Moochi, Liam, Lonely Hearts and Taylor will preview their latest summer collections, to help raise funds for a cure for breast cancer.

On Tuesday 11 November, Addington Raceway hosts the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup Day, where New Zealand’s best pacer, Terror To Love, is lining up for an unprecedented fourth successive win.

The Canterbury A&P Show, from 12–14 November, is where country comes to town in a spectacular mix of colour, excitement and competition with lots of family fun. Headline act Salmonella Dub will be performing live across all three days of this year’s Show.

The racing action continues with the Coupland’s Bakeries Mile on 12 November at Riccarton Park. Then on 14 November, Addington’s Show Day Races feature the Woodlands NZ Free For All for the very best pacers, and the Hellers Dominion for the highest quality trotters.

It all finishes with the highlight of the week, the Christchurch Casino NZ Cup and New Zealand Bloodstock 1000 Guineas Day, at Riccarton Park Racecourse on Saturday 15 November – one of the most popular race events in the country, and one which always draws a large crowd.
