It was a day of competition that the New Zealand Para-Cycling team is immensely proud of as the tandem pairing of Emma Foy and Laura Fairweather (sighted pilot) defended their World Champion title in the Women’s B 3km Pursuit at the 2015 UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships in the Netherlands.

Brendon Cameron (PNZ Head Performance Coach) said, “This is a really good result to have backed up a World Championship title year on year.   Emma has only been in the sport for 2 ½ years and she is improving every year, just becoming stronger and being a better Para-Cyclist, so she is seeing great development.  We are in great shape for Rio.  We will compete at next year’s World Championships and then onto Rio.”

World Champion Emma Foy said, “Coming into this competition we had the goal of defending our rainbow jerseys and so on the past year we have been working really hard to keep moving forward from the Track World Championships in Mexico last year.  Each pursuit we have done we have got a little bit faster and today we got faster again so we are really happy with our overall performance.”

World Champion pilot Laura Fairweather said, “We have been working really hard for the last couple of months training together at the Avantidrome in Cambridge.  For us coming here today it was just a matter of working through our processes and going out and executing what we had been doing at training quite a few times in the last few months.  We were really happy we could do that and come away with a good result, defend out World title and getting our Rainbow Jerseys back.  It was a good day all round for Emma and I.”

Foy and Fairweather were joined on the medal podium by the Japanese tandem of Yurie Kanuma and Mai Tanaka winning Silver, and Irish tandem of Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal.

Kate Horan was competed in the Women’s C4 3km Pursuit placing fourth.

A great UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships so far with the New Para-Cycling team having won a medal of every colour - one Gold, one Silver and one Bronze.

The final day of racing tomorrow will see Emma Foy and Laura Fairweather compete in the Women’s B 3km Sprint and Kate Horan in the Women C1 – 5 Scratch.
