In a move that will make chocolate lovers happy, Countdown has today announced it is dropping the price of 100g Lindt chocolate - for the long term.

Chocolate connoisseurs can now enjoy 26 flavours of 100g Lindt chocolate for just $3.50 a block or two for $6.00. The Lindt 100g range joins more than 1,000 other everyday grocery items on Price Lockdown at Countdown, meaning customers will benefit from lower prices for the long-term.

Countdown’s Acting General Manager of Merchandising, Antoine Dupont, says the Lindt chocolate Lockdown is further proof of Countdown’s commitment to driving prices down for supermarket shoppers.

“As a self-confessed chocaholic who used to live in Switzerland, Lindt’s home country, I can say I’m very excited by this Lockdown. Countdown has put 1,000 products on Price Lockdown in the past 18 months, many of these have been staple grocery products so we’re pleased to be dropping the price on a product our customers can treat themselves with,” says Dupont.

“We’re committed to lowering prices for longer across our full range. We did it with $1 bread and we’re doing it again with Lindt chocolate. We’ll continue to look for new ways to deliver savings to our customers,” added Dupont.

Nutritionist and senior lecturer at AUT University Mikki Williden explains the reason chocolate is a much loved indulgence – and that there are proven benefits when enjoyed in moderate amounts.

“I love that Lindt are offering some of the best quality chocolate on the market. The great news for chocolate lovers is that we are finding out more about the health benefits of the cacao bean, which is the main ingredient in chocolate,” says Williden.

“Not only does dark chocolate provide components such as polyphenols and flavonoids which have antioxidant properties, scientists have recently discovered that the flavonoids actually feed our good gut bacteria. The darker the better when it comes to chocolate, and a couple of squares of the darker varieties, 85% and 90%, would fit well within an individual's healthy diet,” says Williden.

She adds, “The best thing about the dark chocolate is that it’s lower in sugar, so it's easier to enjoy a small amount and not feel the need to consume the entire block!”

The Lindt chocolate Lockdown follows other long-term price reductions on more than 1,000 everyday items over the last 18 months at Countdown, including the popular $1 Homebrand bread, and other staple products such as frozen peas, flour, tinned tomatoes, toilet paper, and baby wipes and nappies.
