New Art and Literature Tour Paints a Picture of Colonial Tahiti

Modern day explorers can see Tahiti through the eyes of some of Europe’s most famous writers, artists and adventurers during a special one-off Colonial-themed tour of the island in March next year.

Departing Auckland on March 8, 2016, the Art and Literature in Colonial Tahiti tour will allow travellers to walk on the same sands as Captain Cook, savour the landscapes that inspired artist Paul Gaugin, see the house where James Norman Hall wrote the Mutiny on the Bounty, visit the village where Rupert Brooke lived with his Tahitian lover and trawl the downtown markets that Henri Matisse frequented.

The four-day tour features a half-day excursion to Tahiti’s east coast including a visit to Point Venus, where Captain Cook observed the transit of Venus in 1769, and James Norman Hall’s family home.

As part of a full day circle island tour, guests will follow in the footsteps of Henri Matisse and visit the location of the award-winning film Tabu as well as a visit to novelist Robert Keable’s house. During their stay in Tahiti guests will also have time to explore the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands and the bustling Papeete markets.

Well-known New Zealand writer Graeme Lay, who has written numerous fiction and non-fiction books set in and around the South Pacific, will escort the group.

Priced from $3597* per person twin share, the tour includes entrance to the James Norman Hall House, Robert Keable House and the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands, as well as return economy airfares from Auckland to Papeete flying Air Tahiti Nui, five nights’ accommodation at Le Meridien Tahiti with daily breakfast, transfers and a farewell dinner show. Every guest will also receive a personally signed copy of one of Graeme’s books, set in the South Pacific.
