The force awakens at the Central Library this Saturday (10 October) with the return of international Star Wars Reads Day.

In a galaxy not so far away, children and teens can dress up and enjoy a day of Star Wars reading, quizzes and activities – including lightsaber training.

Luke Skywalker’s Amazing Story will launch the children’s (5-13 years old) event at 10.45am followed by a quiz, lightsaber skills training, star fighter Lego build, Nerf gun blaster challenges and more hands-on activities. Children who come dressed as their favourite Star Wars character will be in to win DK’s new book Star Wars Absolutely Everything You Need To Know.

May the force be with teens (13 year old and above) as they hone their inner Jedi Master and take part in the Waikato Kendo Club’s lightsaber combat class at 1.30pm. They’ll learn new skills, choreography and have one-on-one lightsaber battles. Teams of four – pre-arranged or set up on the day – can take part in the Star Wars trivia quiz at 2.30pm with hands-on activities and challenges.

Hamilton City Libraries Acting Director Rebecca Whitehead says Star Wars Reads Day is a major international event for young Star Wars fans – and the library – to celebrate the science fiction classic.
“This year’s event has so much to offer and it’s great to offer this free Star Wars experience at the Central Library. The library will be a-buzz with activity on Saturday, and we hope everyone can end the school holidays on a high note.”

The Hamilton City Libraries Facebook page is running a competition to win a double pass to Armageddon 2015 and a Luke Skywalker bobble-head prize pack. Head over to the library’s page and like the competition post to go in the draw.
