The countdown is on – there’s just under two months to go until award-winning South Island tourism attraction Tekapo Springs opens its three brand-new pools.

The year-round attraction beloved by visitors from all around the globe has announced plans to open the new multi-million-dollar facilities for visitors, families and locals to enjoy from Christmas onwards.

The three new pools are designed to perfectly complement the three existing and hugely popular pools – including an 80sqm kid’s aqua play/spray area, a 130sqm kid’s beach access pool and an 80sqm adults’ pool.

Since the first sod was turned on September 1, progress has been swift and exciting, with the new pools taking shape, initial landscaping underway and Tekapo Springs staff thrilled to see dreams become reality.

By mid-October the pools had been dug out and the concrete base laid, and brickwork around the pools was in place. The second concrete pour was last week with more blockwork following.

This week the construction team has been prepping the children’s pool and plan to lay more concrete in the coming fortnight. Fibreglassing of pools starts November 16.

Heat exchangers have arrived on site and are due to be installed in November and completion of all the pool moulding is on track for early to mid-November, which will be interesting to see before they’re sprayed with fibreglass.

Tekapo Springs’ owner and managing director Karl Burtscher said that as the pools literally took shape on a daily basis, staff could start to get a sense of what they would deliver to guests.

“You can now get down to pool level and really appreciate the views from the new adult pool in particular, which quite possibly will have the best overall views down Lake Tekapo of any of the pools, old and new,” he said.

“We’re thrilled to see how well they’re coming along and can’t wait for the reaction we’ll get from guests from day one.”

The new pool additions – themed ‘High Country Tarns’, each with its own distinctive shade of aqua green – are part of Tekapo Springs’ long-term growth strategy for expanding its aquatic attractions and offering a wider range of water temperatures and features.

They’re scheduled to open on December 26 2015, and Mr Burtscher said the aim was to offer more fun and exciting aquatic options for families, children and adults. Key features include:

  • a new cooler adult pool - perfect for increasingly hotter summer days
  • an aqua play and spray area for kids
  • feature water jets, funnels, geysers, spots and more

The new pools will run through winter, depending on outside weather temperatures.

Tekapo Springs is nestled on the shores of stunning Lake Tekapo, boasting a unique mix of summer and winter recreation and relaxation.

Open 364 days a year, the attraction already includes three existing outdoor hot pools, a steam and sauna facility, an ice rink, water slides, summer and winter tubing, a day spa, café and fully licensed bar.

The company has evolved into a year-round ‘must-do’, on the bucket list of many visitors to the South Island, as well as stamping its mark as an important centrepiece in the Tekapo community.

The new pools are testament to the company’s drive to grow and develop, while continuously exceeding customer expectations. The three new pools help step-up Tekapo Springs’ summer offering and put it among one of the country’s leading tourism operators.
