This morning, 10 ASB Auckland Marathon runners woke up, had some breakfast, laced up their shoes, completed a gruelling 42km marathon AND received an improved home loan rate - all before lunchtime!

After applying to be part of Run Down Your Rate in September, 10 runners were randomly selected to receive a reduced two-year fixed home loan interest rate that would be decided by the time they cross the finishing line.  Alternatively, runners also have the opportunity to gift their rate to a friend of family member.

Run Down Your Rate competitor, Katie Kemp, Wellington won the women’s ASB Auckland Marathon - with an extremely fast time of 2 hours 42 minutes and securing a two-year home loan rate of 2.42%.

Katie says:  “I’m so pleased with my time – it’s a personal best.  I have a small family, three girls aged 7, 5 and 4.  We have chosen to have a parent stay home with our children which does come with financial challenges on one income. We think the girls are very lucky to have a parent at home with them.  A lower interest rate will enable us to pay off our mortgage faster and be able to start putting money aside for the girls education and future needs.”

Run Down Your Rate competitor, Peter Sygrove of Auckland, says: “My partner and I have just purchased our first house so the timing of the competition could not be better.”

Running a time of 2 hours 47 minutes, Peter will be receiving a two-year fixed home loan rate of 2.47% compared to the current home loan rate of 4.49% p.a.

“This new home loan rate is going to help us out massively as we are stretched to the eyeballs given the property prices in Auckland,” Peter says.

Finally Tania Crosbie, of Kohimarama who ran in a time of 3 hours 39 minutes secured a two-year home loan rate of 3.39%.  Tania says:  “My husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma a year ago.  He has had a year of treatment including radiation, chemo and a stem cell transplant and still has several months of chemo ahead of him.  He has been off work for this time and while we have managed financially, it would be brilliant to have our rate reduced to ease the pressure a bit.”

ASB executive general manager marketing and communications Roger Beaumont says: “Congratulations to all of the ASB Auckland Marathon runners who have taken part this morning, completing that distance is a massive achievement. To our 10 ASB Run Down Your Rate runners, we hope your new home loan interest rates really make a difference to you and your families.”

NOTE: The ASB Auckland Marathon happened on 01 November 2015.
