The 50th anniversary Vodafone NZ Music Awards produced very impressive results according to Recorded Music New Zealand with best-ever media coverage including an inaugural live broadcast on TV3.

Recorded Music CEO Damian Vaughan says around 5,000 people packed Vector Arena while MediaWorks reports the show reached more than 600,000 New Zealanders across two broadcasts plus thousands more on video on demand.

In addition to the large audience that watched the TV3 broadcast, a further 900,000 watched the Vodafone Snapchat Story which sent live updates and videos from the awards to the popular photo sharing social app.

The VNZMA generated in excess of $10 million in publicity value for the event and sponsors.

The VNZMA Facebook page activity reached nearly 200,000 globally with people following events online from as far away as Germany and the UK while TV3 also live streamed backstage interviews.

On the night, the official hashtag #VNZMA was trending on Twitter.

Mr Vaughan says the increased interest in the awards reflects outstanding growth in interest in home-grown music, both from consumers and among the commercial sector.

“The 50th Anniversary show was one of the best we’ve had and delivered not only a great live event to a packed Vector Arena but also a colourful and entertaining live broadcast experience countrywide.

“While a live broadcast can never fully capture every moment and nuance of a live arena event, we are proud of the MediaWorks production in taking the greatest night in New Zealand music to the nation and beyond.

“We're looking forward to working together with our members and all interested parties in making the next 50 years of music awards even better.”

Andrew Szusterman, group entertainment content director at MediaWorks says: “It’s been a long partnership between ourselves and the recording industry in bringing the awards to the country and one we’re very proud of.

“Making the move to TV3 this year demonstrates MediaWorks’ commitment in recognising the best musicians the country has. We’re very proud to be involved.”

Mr Vaughan says Recorded Music was also very happy with the work of the MC and host Taika Waititi.

“The Vodafone NZ Music Awards acknowledges and honours music from a wide cross section of New Zealand culture and society. Taika injected fresh and entertaining material in to a traditional live hosting role and made a great contribution to a night to remember.

“Altogether 30 awards were either presented or acknowledged at the event and that says much about how important the Vodafone Music Awards have become not only to the industry but also to consumers."

Mr Vaughan acknowledged the important role of sponsors in maintain the momentum of the awards.

“Without the support of Vodafone and twenty three other sponsors and official suppliers the awards simply would not be possible,” he says.
