Global premium sports wear brand, SKINS, has launched an equity crowdfunding campaign in the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

SKINS, the compression sportswear label, is worn by many of the world’s top athletes. Its products are distributed to over 40 countries, and its revenue was more than $43 million last year.

SKINS are seeking to raise a minimum of $800k NZD in Australia and New Zealand through the Equitise Platform, as well as additional funding from UK-based platform, Seedrs. This is a global offer and highlights the significant reach that equity crowdfunding can have. The funds from this investment round will be used to bring new innovative products to market and to support SKINS work in campaigning to make a difference in sport off-the-field.

SKINS, founded in 1996 and currently selling products in 43 countries, and has stood out from the crowd in recent years for a number of activist initiatives in the world of sport, including, most notably, their role as pat of a campaign group calling for reform of FIFA. The crowdfunding campaign goes live on 24 February 2016.

Executive Chairman, Jaimie Fuller, said of the crowdfunding initiative: “SKINS began life making sports wear that enabled athletes to improve their performance.  Over the years, our mission has transcended the field of play and we have become increasingly concerned with making a difference in the world of sport.  We see equity crowdfunding as a fantastic opportunity for like-minded people to become part of our journey.”

Will Mahon-Heap, Co-Founder & New Zealand Manager, said: “Working with SKINS is a fantastic opportunity, it’s a brand that is focused on making a difference in the world of sport. We admire the company and their mission, and are very excited to help other likeminded people be given the chance to buy into a unique and emotive brand.”

The SKINS offer is a novel transaction for equity crowdfunding. Equitise is running the transaction through Equitise’s New Zealand nominee company. Equitise has listened to market feedback, and wants to ensure that investable companies have the ability for one shareholder on their register, and that investors are looked after. The Equitise nominee structure allows both of these things to happen, much like the old angel model allowed. It is traditional investing brought into the modern era.
