New legislation being introduced today will give people greater peace of mind that food sold at restaurants, bakeries, market stalls and dairies is being prepared and stored safely.

The Food Act 2014 requires all food businesses to have a written plan outlining how they manage, prepare and store food. Although the new law takes effect today, existing food businesses will move over to the new system at different times over the three-year transition period. Businesses can see how the new law applies to them using an online tool.

Peter McGregor, Hamilton City Council Environmental Health Manager, says the majority of Hamilton’s food businesses voluntarily transitioned to the new system.

“We’ve already helped around 230 food businesses set up a plan in the past year. The changes and new process are a positive move as customers can be sure that the food they are buying is as safe as possible,” says Mr McGregor.

Scott Gallacher, Deputy Director-General Regulation and Assurance at the Ministry for Primary Industries says the changes will modernise food safety in New Zealand and make it easier for businesses to ensure their food is safe.

“The new law applies to a wide range of businesses, and includes any which make, sell, grow or transport food commercially. This includes those who serve food as part of their business, like education providers or care homes for example,” says Mr Gallacher.
