Join us for Anzac Day services

Several services take place in Lower Hutt on Anzac Day as part of the WW100 events from 2014-2019 which commemorate New Zealand’s participation in the First World War.

In addition to dawn services in Lower Hutt, Wainuiomata and Taita, and regular services in Eastbourne and Stokes Valley, this year’s Petone service has a special commemoration.

One of the first anniversaries of the Gallipoli landings took place on New Zealand soil on 25 April 1916. To commemorate the occasion, railwaymen from Petone Workshops and Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia exchanged national flags.

At Petone on 25 April 1916 an Australian Red Ensign was unfurled from a commemorative flagstaff, the top section made from kauri and the bottom from Australian hardwood to symbolise "the unity of Australian and New Zealand railwaymen in peace and war".

To mark the centenary of this notable event, Hutt City Council and KiwiRail warmly invite you to attend the 7am Anzac Day service at Petone, and then later to enjoy a steam train ride aboard the Passchendaele Express, a train of classic carriages hauled by steam locomotive Ab 608.

Steam train ride tickets: $5 - all proceeds go to charity.

Tickets must be purchased prior to event from Wellington and Petone Railway Stations or Lower Hutt i-SITE.

Travel on the steam train is one-way only, Wellington to Taita or Taita to Wellington (normal trains will be available for your return trip).
