The main toilet block at Hamilton Lake Domain is set to undergo a major refit.

The toilet block on the eastern (Waikato Hospital) side of the domain will be closed for eight weeks for complete refurbishment, which will include new toilet and bathroom facilities, a sail shade and covered picnic area.

The work will begin on 2 May and is expected to be concluded by 30 June.

Sally Sheedy, Hamilton City Council's Parks and Open Spaces Manager, says the refit reflects the Council's desire to continually improve one of the city's most popular parks.

"Hamilton Lake Domain is one of our main destination parks, and we want to make sure the facilities meet the needs of the growing numbers of residents and visitors who enjoy the park," Miss Sheedy says.

"The building footprint will remain the same, but it's going to be completely new on the inside – this will be an extensive renovation. There will be some disruption, but we're confident the results will please people who visit the destination playground and the Domain once works are completed. "

The work will cause some disruption, and in the first two weeks the enclosed junior playground area at the park will be unavailable while contractors carry out initial interior demolition work.

The entire block will be fenced off for the duration of the project, with a portable toilet unit available on site while works are completed. Alternative toilets for park users are located near the picnic lawn car park on the same side of the park, and also on the opposite side of the park near Innes Common.
