Visit Whanganui and Whanganui and Partners are thrilled to announce a public competition, “Den of Dragons” where members of the public are invited to submit their application to turn an event idea for Whanganui into reality.  To participate, people will need to make their application for the short list and then present at a dragon’s den-style event.  The winner will come away with a prize package worth more than $15,000 to help make their event idea a reality.

Local and national businesses have got behind the competition and will offer the winning event a package consisting of advertising in the Wanganui Chronicle, radio advertising and promotion with More FM, website design and social media with Two Monkeys Web Design, signage from Morrie Gibbons Signs Ltd and printing from H&A Print. Included in this will be the services of Kathy Cunningham of Empire PR & Events. Kathy will mentor the competition winner and provide PR services as well.

“I love this idea and it gives the Whanganui community the chance to test their concept and win a prize focused on producing a successful event,” explains Kathy Cunningham.  “We are helping to create a perfect storm of creative energy, a mixture of marketing, project management and a determination to succeed will see the winner thrive and Whanganui benefit!”

To enter please visit http://whanganuiwhatson.nz/ . The application form will ask the contestant to describe their event idea, why they want to make this event happen, how they will manage the event, describe the target audience and how they will promote the event.  From these submissions, the best will be selected and those people will be asked to present live to the judges.  The Dragons Den – style event will be open to the public to allow interested community people, friends, family and supporters to attend.

“I’m really looking forward to it.  It’s great to see the creativity out in our community and to be able to help turn that into reality is fantastic” says Lyn Cheyne, Promotion & Marketing Manager.  “Whanganui events continue to put back into our community both economically and in terms of promotion and reputation.  This is a great way to combine some fun with a significant opportunity.”

Visit Whanganui is especially interested in events that will occur between and including the months of March and October, attract visitors from outside our district to Whanganui, support Whanganui’s reputation in arts, culture and heritage and/or utilise our venues and sportsgrounds.  The live event date is 27 July and applications must be in by 10 July.
