Poetry enthusiasts can take their poem from page to stage at this year’s Hamilton Poetry Slam.

Join Hamilton Slamdown Poetry and Te Ahuirei a Rangitahi Trust at the Hamilton City Library for a Spoken Word Slam on Friday 26 August, during which local poets can perform their own material.

The Poetry Slam is one of hundreds of events and activities taking place across New Zealand on National Poetry Day (26 August), and gives local poets a chance to perform to a live audience.

The Slam has two categories; the Junior Slam is for young people aged 10 to 16 years, and Open Slam welcomes all ages. The junior competition kicks off at 6.30pm in the event space on level 1, with open following from 8pm.

Entry is free, and the event is open to anyone interested. Poets who want to be involved should register their interest through the online event calendar at hamiltonlibraries.co.nz or by emailing tracy.robinson@hcc.govt.nz. Registrations will also be accepted on the night.

Participants may perform an original piece of work. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges, and prizes to the value of $250 is up for grabs on the night.
