New pop up space in Napier CBD

An often overlooked space tucked between two buildings in the Napier CBD has been transformed into something which should be far more appealing to passersby.

The colourfully painted space off Dickens Street was once a service lane but now provides a link for pedestrians right through to the small Station Street reserve and car park beyond. “We’ve tidied up what has been an unloved space,” says Napier City Council Road Asset Manager Jon Schwass, who came up with the idea of a pop-up to make better use of the space. 

Planters containing orange trees and strawberries, bench seats and artificial turf decorate the space, which is complemented by the existing Sea Walls mural, painted earlier this year by artist Christie Wright, on the side of one of the buildings.

Jono Hall from Nfinite Fitness and Health Ltd next door to the pop-up is a great supporter. “I hope lots of people try it, I think it’s a nice sunny spot for people to enjoy their lunch or coffee.”

Council Heritage Planner Fleur Lincoln says the pop-up is very much in keeping with the ideas behind City Vision. “It’s yet another space in the CBD where people can relax and take a break, or even if you’re just passing through, at least now it provides something attractive to look at.” 

The City Vision: small city, BIG ideas project, which is still evolving, is led by the Council. It incorporates different ideas on heritage, design and transport with the intent of increasing the ease of moving around the city, whether by vehicle, bike or on foot, and trials new ideas to make city living more attractive.
There have been other pop-up spaces installed in the CBD over the past 18 months, such as the chill out space Urban Oasis in Market Lane, a children’s play area on Emerson Street West, and a “parklet” on Tennyson Street.
