Flamboyance, fun and frills are the order of the day for DNA Gay Ski Week Queenstown’s first Diversity Day at The Remarkables ski area next week.

The countdown’s on for the Southern Hemisphere’s largest Winter Pride event, where hundreds of gay men and women converge on Queenstown between August 27 and September 3 for a week-long celebration of skiing, socialising and fun-fuelled evenings.

New to the calendar is Diversity Day on Monday August 29, where anyone and everyone’s invited to dig their most deeply colourful outfit out of the back of the wardrobe and enter a free Drag Race on the mountain.

My Kitchen Rules Australia star Jordan Bruno and Mum Anna will be at The Remarkables for Gay Ski Week Queenstown’s Diversity Day

2016 Gay Ski Week Queenstown ambassador Jordan Bruno – star of My Kitchen Rules Australia along with his Mum Anna – will be cheering on contestants on the day as they battle it out on a dual slalom run on The Remarkables’ Alta Blue trail.

Competitors can enter online at www.gayskiweekqt.com or from 9am on the day on the mountain. Those up for the ‘funnest of fun days out’ need to buy a lift pass for the day and be an intermediate to advanced skier or boarder, and racing starts at 11am (weather permitting).

Organisers Sally and Mandy Whitewoods promise a great day out on the snow with plenty of great spot prizes up for grabs for the most flamboyant outfit or best face-plant. Winners will receive prizes including Outside Sports vouchers and clothing, pampering goodies from LUSH Australia and Milford Sound scenic cruises with Southern Discoveries.

The Remarkables ski area staff will get into the swing of things by dressing in purple for the day, the colour of diversity.

Jordan and Anna will serve up ‘secret recipe’ MKR Australia-themed snacks from a BBQ on the deck over lunchtime, where the party will continue with a DJ, refreshments and prizegiving.

“We love adding new and different events to the calendar, making it bigger and better each year, and this one should be a fantastic day out on the snow for all our visitors and any locals who’re very welcome to come along too,” says Sally.

“Gay Ski Week Queenstown is all about eight days and nights of glitz and glamour in New Zealand’s most popular winter resort and we couldn’t have a party without involving the mountains too!”

MKR celebrity Jordan has never been on snow before, let alone ski, so he’s gamely having his first-ever private lesson on the day.

“He’s super-keen and hugely excited to get into the mountains and on snow, and where better to do that in Queenstown,” says Sally.

The week-long programme kicks off with a bang at the Broken Shed Opening Party at The World Bar on Saturday August 27, followed by a fun night cruise on Lake Wakatipu labelled Anchors Away, partying onSouthern Discoveries’ famous Spirit of Queenstown catamaran.

Fun, flamboyance and frills are in order for ten days of DNA Gay Ski Week Queenstown events

Laugh the night away at Sasso restaurant for MoreFM’s fun and lively Comedy Night on Tuesday August 30, then award-winning Central Otago winery Gibbston Valley presents The Caluzzi Queens Cabaret Night on Wednesday at Skyline.

For those who’ve ever fancied themselves as the next James Bond or Darth Vader, the Heroes and Villainsthemed final night dance party is definitely a ‘must do’ on the social calendar on Saturday September 3. Presented by Family Bar & Nightclub, it’s back at the popular Queenstown Memorial Centre.

Other highlights include LYC Queer Quiz Night, a fun and social quiz night with a glamourous host and fabulous prizes up for grabs, the infamous SKYCITY Casino Karaoke night at hosted by Miss Ribena and a Desperado’s Foam Party held at Loco Cantina.

“We’re looking forward to an ‘Ab Fab’ week as always with hundreds of visitors in town ready to recharge, relax and party,” says Sally. “The Comedy Night’s always an early sell-out and this year’s no exception so you’re either coming or you’re not!

“There’s just a handful of tickets left for the opening night party and cabaret night, and they’re being snapped up fast, so don’t miss out.”

Each year more people attend and new sponsors and local business come on board and embrace the festival experience, says Sally.

“Queenstown comes alive during Gay Ski Week. It’s a great time of year to make the most of everything the resort offers for a fantastic winter holiday, and a great opportunity for local businesses to get involved with the LGBT community.”

Final tickets available from the Gay Ski Week QT website www.gayskiweekqt.com. Latest news updates are on www.facebook.com/gayskiweekqt
