FOR SAFE HOUSEHOLD CLEANING – GO BUSH!
Say G’day to powerful natural cleaning ingredients with Koala Eco

25th MAY, 2017: Promising to transform your home into a sparkling, sanitised sanctuary, research[i] shows that conventional, chemical-laden household cleaners could be more dangerous than the very germs they’re designed to kill. But are natural, plant-based cleaning products really effective in keeping your house clean? According to Jessica Bragdon, founder of Koala Eco, the answer is yes.
“Simply put, you don’t need to use chemicals when cleaning your house, says Bragdon, who explains that some of the most powerful and safe plant-based cleaning ingredients exist in our own backyard – the Australian bush.

“More than 150 chemicals commonly used in our homes are associated with allergies, cancer, psychological disorders and birth defects[ii], and of course, the environmental impact of washing toxic chemical compounds down the drain is significant,” she said. “The synthetic chemicals used in conventional household cleaning products usually consist of a complex mixture of toxic compounds whose health and environmental effects are either unknown or known to be unsafe. Meanwhile, synthetic cleaners don’t legally require their ingredients to be disclosed on their labelling, which makes it nearly impossible for consumers to know exactly what toxins they’re contaminating their home with,” says Bragdon.

But it’s not all bad news. Proven to be naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial[iii], Australian essential oils can disinfect, purify and remove stains in the home just as well as synthetic chemicals can, says Bragdon.

The Koala Eco range is Bragdon’s brainchild, after working with a chemist to create 100 percent natural cleaning formulas powerful enough to cut through household grime throughout the home, while remaining completely non-toxic and eco friendly. The range uses high concentrations of Australian essential oils, combined with only plant derived ingredients to provide all natural cleaning power without the artificial fragrances, colours and harsh chemicals common to home cleaning products.
Here Bragdon dishes the dirt on these essential oils and how they can provide a powerful alternative to common chemical cleaners:

EUCALYPTUS OIL
addition to its super clean scent, Eucalyptus Oil has been touted for its ability to stimulate the immune system, reduce inflammation, purify the air and disinfect pretty much anything. But, can it kill the dangerous bacteria that lurk in your home? According to Bragdon, yes it can, which is why it forms the basis of Koala Eco’s All Natural Multi-Purpose Bathroom Cleaner (RRP $10.90, 500ml). “Nasty bacteria such as E. Coli, Streptococcus and even Salmonella can be found in nearly every bathroom,” says Bragdon. “While these bacteria can be quite dangerous, the solution isn’t to douse them in toxic chemicals such as bleach or ammonia, which are known to be two of the most corrosive, toxic chemicals on the market,” she says.

LEMON MYRTLE
Lemon Myrtle provides world’s richest source of citral, a liquid found in citrus fruits that offers potent antibacterial, antimicrobial and antifungal properties. According to Bragdon, in addition to its fresh smelling scent, Lemon Myrtle is a powerful and safe option to chemically-fueled kitchen surface sprays. “It’s a common belief that nasty moulds and bacteria such as Aspergillus Niger, E. Coli, Salmonella and Listeria that reside in kitchens, require a hard surface spray to be killed,” says Bragdon. Lemon Myrtle has been proven to kill the types of bacteria, which is why Bragdon has used it as the primary ingredient in Koala Eco’s All Natural Dish Soap (RRP $13.50, 500ml) and Multi-Purpose Kitchen Cleaner (RRP $10.90, 500ml).

MANDARIN OIL
Also known for its first class cleaning qualities, Mandarin Oil also acts as an effective detergent, deodoriser and disinfectant. “In addition to being supremely effective in repelling common household bacteria, Mandarin Oil is also known for being the most calming and uplifting essential oil, which is why we decided to add it to our dish soap and Multi-Purpose Kitchen Cleaner,” says Bragdon.

PEPPERMINT OIL
According to Bragdon, the synthetic cleaners used to clean windows and polish chrome and stainless steel are particularly nasty. “While chemicals such as monoethanolamine, ammonia and butyl cellosolve are great to give a sparkling and streak-free finish to chrome, steel and glass, they can also cause serious respiratory damage, chemical burns and in severe cases, with prolonged exposure, can cause damage to the kidneys and lungs,” says Bragdon. “Peppermint Oil is a great option when it comes to polishing up stainless steel , chrome and glass, leaving them streak free and super clean, without the nasty side effects,” she adds. Additionally, Peppermint Oil kills many household bacteria such as E. Coli, H. Pylori, Salmonella and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus and also acts as a natural insect and pest repellant. Peppermint Oil forms the basis of theKoala Eco All Natural Stainless Steel and Chrome Cleaner (RRP $12.50, 500ml) and the Koala Eco All Natural Glass Cleaner (RRP $10.90, 500ml).
