New Zealand riders enjoyed reasonable performances without glory on the third day of the UCI Junior World Track Championships in Montichari, Italy.

Palmerston North rider Libby Arbuckle finished seventh in the omnium, now under the new one-day, four-discipline event which is raced sparingly in New Zealand.

The 18 year old was in the mix throughout, finishing seventh in the 5km scratch race, eighth in the 5km tempo race, sixth in the elimination and fifth in the Points race.

The event was dominated by local Italian star Letizia Paternoster who won two of the four disciplines including the all-important points race.

Auckland’s Aaron Wyllie, part of the bronze medal winning team pursuit combination, finished seventh in the 25km Points race. The 17 year old won an early sprint and featured in four sprints but tellingly missed the break with five riders getting the 20 point bonus for lapping the field.

His team pursuit mates Josh Scott and Harry Waine were eighth and 10th respectively in qualifying for the 3000m individual pursuit. Scott (Christchurch) clocked 3:19.234 in his qualifying effort with Waine (Auckland) 3:19.845.

Earlier Cambridge sprinter Jackson Ogle clocked 10.674 in qualifying, a fraction outside his national championship junior record. He lost his first round clash against Russia’s Dmitry Nesterov.

Tomorrow’s penultimate day of competition for the Kiwis will see Ellesse Andrews (Cambridge) and Nicole Shields (Clyde) in the individual pursuit, Emily Shearman (Palmerston North) and Shields in the Madison and Invrcargill’s Corbin Strong in the Omnium.
