New Zealand’s fashion focus is firmly on the south as the Redken creative team gears up for a frantic two days backstage at iD Dunedin in early April.

This is the 10th consecutive year in iD Dunedin Fashion Week’s 12 year history that Redken has taken charge of the runway hair creations. Redken creative team leader Richard Kavanagh has been gathering together his concepts for the coveted fashion extravaganza and is bringing an experienced Redken team to the south’s fashion event of the year.

Hair stylists from salons all over New Zealand will be joining forces backstage including Auckland’s Blaze and Dharma, Te Awamutu’s Otto Inc, Ursula Harris and Ruby Tuesdays from Nelson, Cromwell’s Tu Meke Hairdressing, The Hair Company from Mosgiel, Wellington’s Glory, Hi-Jinx Timaru and local salons Dal Vivo, Xtreme Image, Aart on London and Do.

Christchurch’s Soho, Evolve and Bliss had committed prior to last week’s disaster but we are now unsure of their involvement. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected. The team is dressing hair for New Zealand designers such as Nom*D, Carlson, Twenty-seven names, Kathryn Wilson, Liz Mitchell who are showing at the main event. It’s also working with iD Dunedin special guest Catherine Smith who is showing the Darnell Collection. It is Australia′s largest private collection of international vintage couture clothing including original items designed by Chanel and Dior from the 1960s.

Richard says the hair looks this year are entirely globally influenced with a nod towards his recent work for Redken at New York Fashion Week.

“iD Dunedin is one of my favourite fashion events on the international calendar and this season we'll be in line with the current trends showing for the northern hemisphere autumn / winter 2011.”

The 25 strong Redken team will be showcasing several different looks on the catwalk for the brand’s backstage sponsorship at the events main shows on Friday and Saturday. “We have three distinct model groups at iD Dunedin this year, each of which will be treated very differently for hair. We have a very sophisticated and highly polished look, a gender-neutral androgynous look and a natural look in 2011.”

Richard’s sophisticated and highly polished look features thick, luscious, healthy hair parted cleanly in the centre, blow-dried and ironed super straight and polished using Redken’s shine spray, Shine Flash 02.

“To make this hair work, it's all about the preparation,” he says. “Each girl will have an individualised product cocktail applied to clean washed hair. Redken Sheer Straight 06 straightening gel, Power Tame 16 straightening balm, and Satinwear 02 ultimate blow dry lotion will all be used to create the perfect control and shine before blow-drying smooth and then ironing poker straight.” Richard says there will be a change for the models half way through the show when their centre-parted hair is pu lled back in “the perfect ponytail a la Calvin Klein”.

A second look features androgynous-looking girls, with gritty texture, created with Redken Blown Away 09 protective blow dry lotion, Full Frame 07 mousse and Redken for Men Maneuver Working Wax. “We are adding a small detail to each model’s hair such as a loose ponytail twisted and almost falling out, smal! l braids added to reduce bulk or a slick of gel over the top of the head for contrast.” Richard says as always, for the very natural girls, the hair that looks the least done requires the most work and finesse.

“To create a freshly washed romantic feel for these girls we'll be blow-drying with Redken Satinwear 02 ultimate blow dry lotion and a bristle brush before moulding! the hair with a 1.25-inch curling iron to add movement, shine and wist fulness.

“We'll finish each with Redken Forceful 23, super strength finishing spray, to keep hair in place and tame any fly-aways,” he says. This year iD Dunedin has a new creative identity featuring dark, dramatic and ethereal designs used on all promotional material.

The iD Dunedin International Emerging Designer Awards takes place on Thursday April 7 with the iD Dunedin Fashion Show being held over two nights on Friday 8 and Saturday 9 April. For more information on iD Dunedin Fashion Week 2011 visit www.idfashion.co.nz
