New Zealand cyclists will lose a valuable pathway to international road racing success if PureBlack Racing is unable to secure sufficient funding to pursue its plans, said the sport’s governing  body BikeNZ.

In a statement released yesterday PureBlack Racing announced that a lack of sponsorship funding has resulted in them curtailing plans to compete in Europe in 2012.

“It’s heartbreaking for New Zealand cycling that despite a fantastic debut year and great investment from Sheppard Industries (Avanti) that PureBlack Racing were unable to generate the financial support that they need,” said BikeNZ CEO, Kieran Turner.

“PureBlack Racing has done a great job of promoting cycling, both in New Zealand and internationally, especially by providing another pathway for New Zealand’s aspiring road cyclists.”

Cycling is one of New Zealand’s largest recreational activities and a sport that has enjoyed considerable success on the world stage.

“PureBlack Racing provided much more than just a moving billboard. They developed fantastic leadership and an all-round development experience for its athletes and partners. It is a shame that the current New Zealand market does not fully understand the worldwide scale of cycling and how great the reach and return is compared to other sports.

“BikeNZ is supportive of all cycling endeavours and we hope that PureBlack Racing can find the support needed to bring its plan back to life.”
