The 49th annual Lake Taupo Across the Lake Swim is being held on Saturday 25 February 2012 and this year the event will be providing three options for swimmers.

The traditional 4.2km option, starting at Acacia Bay and finishing at Three Mile Bay, will be available as well as the beginner 1km loop option and a new intermediate 2km loop option, starting and finishing at Three Mile Bay.  The new distance has been introduced to help swimmers progress to the full 4.2km.  Online entries for the event are now open at www.acrossthelakeswim.co.nz

Event Director David Jennings says organisers want to encourage all ages and abilities to get in the water and swim, especially local youth. “This year we want to take the event to the next level and encourage more people to have a go at open water swimming.  We have added in an intermediate distance of 2km to help swimmers build up to the across the lake distance of 4.2km.  We want to make sure we cater for everyone in the family.”

“Swimming is such an important skill to have living in New Zealand and we want to challenge families in our community to have a go at swimming in Australasia’s largest lake – Great Lake Taupo.”

The Lake Taupo Across the Lake Swim started back in 1963 and is Taupo’s longest running event, with thousands of swimmers taking part over the years.  This iconic Taupo Event is organised by the Taupo Moana Rotary Club and AC Baths and any proceeds from the day will go towards promoting water safety in the region.

The event is held late February which provides those competing in the Ironman the opportunity to have a training run.  Great spot prizes are up for grabs on the day.  The swim makes up part of the Erin Baker, Cameron Brown and TriTaupo 4 awards.
