Golden Haul in State Junior Swimming Championships

Auckland’s Gina Galloway bagged a record nine gold medals in a remarkable haul at the State Junior Swimming Championships that finished today.

The national event for swimmers 12 years and under is being staged at two venues – Wellington and Hamilton – this weekend.

Galloway, from the King’s Swim Club, was competing in the 10 years and under division. She won six golds on the first day added a further three gold medals on the final day after winning the 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle and 200m individual medley.

Thomas Wilson also won three gold medals today in the 11 years division, winning the 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 200m medley to go with his four medals from the first day. He helped guide his QEII club to the top club, finishing with nearly double the points from the next team, North Shore.

Stratford’s Joshua Gilbert won six gold medals, including three today in the 10 years and under division in the 50m backstroke, 50m freestyle and 100m breaststroke.

Greendale’s Bruin Maunder also finished with six wins in the 10 years and under category with wins in the 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley.

The championships were held at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre and Waterworld Te Rapa which will be venue for September’s New Zealand Secondary School Championships.

The next major championship is the Mayfair Pools NZ Age Group Championships in Wellington from 6-10 March.
