Over 300 swimmers braved the conditions last weekend and completed the 49th annual Across the Lake Swim in Taupo.

Graham O’Grady won the main event with a time of 50 mins 05 secs followed closely by Mitch Nairn, who was only split seconds behind with a time of 50 mins 14 secs.

Bianca Bradley was the first women home and also took away third place overall in a time of 52 mins 30 secs.   Second women home was Rachel Maidment with a time of 60 mins.

Event Director David Jennings said the event was a success, despite the weather.  “The weather was against us on Saturday but with some experienced heads helping out, we managed to change the course to better suit the conditions.  Despite the late starts and new route, everyone managed to get out there and have a safe swim, with many bodysurfing the waves on the way in.”

Mr Jennings said it was the right decision to introduce compulsory wetsuits, age rules and safety kayaks.  “If we hadn’t taken the extra safety precautions, it is likely the event would have been cancelled,” he said.

This year over 40 swimmers participated in the newer events – the beginner 1km and intermediate 2km swims.  “The 1km was introduced last year and the 2km option this year to encourage everyone in the family to get swimming,” said Mr Jennings.

There were lots of stories being told at the post event breakfast at Three Mile Bay afterwards.  Many of the participants were in training for the upcoming NZ Ironman being held this weekend.

Next year’s Across the Lake Swim will bring a big celebration with it being the 50th anniversary for Taupo’s longest running event.  “We are really looking forward to the big 50 next year,” said Mr Jennings.   It is being held on Saturday 23 February 2013.
