Wellington is being introduced to the high-energy sport of competitive cheerleading this weekend, with the region’s first competition running on Sunday.  This is no stereotypical pom pom shaking on the sidelines though, the two and half minute routines are crammed full of gymnastic tumbling, stunts and basket tosses, which see girls being lifted and thrown into the air while pulling different tricks.  Add the dance, lighting, sparkly uniforms and pumping music mashes, and the result is a stage-worthy performance.

The sport has grown rapidly in New Zealand in recent years, but the majority of teams and competitions are still Auckland based.  Wellington’s Ministry of Cheer was created with the aim of changing this.  “There are around 15 teams in the Wellington region, but for many the cost of travel has prevented them from getting any actual competition experience so far” explains Ministry founder Sofia McLean, “Exposing these cheerleaders, especially the younger ones, to the competition environment will hopefully inspire them to carry on through the higher levels, which will help to grow the sport locally”.

Among those competing is Tawa’s Bigair Cheer, with three teams: an under 14 all-girl team, a senior all-girl team, and a senior elite mixed team.  “Although our cheerleaders also go to two Auckland competitions each year, they’re really looking forward to this weekend because many of their friends and family are yet to see them in action” says Bigair owner William Davenport.  Bigair’s elite mixed team are also competing in Brisbane Australia next month, which makes this event a good chance to test their skills before facing off against some international competition.

The Ministry of Cheer Central Cheerleading Competition is being held this Sunday, the 5th of August, with teams competing from 1:30pm.  The venue is the Capital GymSports Centre, 11 Hutchison Road in Newtown, and spectator admission is $5.00.
