The 2014 Santos Tour Down Under will feature a new city circuit around the River Torrens for the People’s Choice Classic.

Announcing the route for the January 19 race, Tourism Minister, Leon Bignell, said the new course offers fans great vantage points of some of the most picturesque parts of Adelaide.

“The People’s Choice Classic is always an exhilarating preview to the six-stage Santos Tour Down Under and in 2014 we’ll see riders start the closed-circuit race on Victoria Drive,” Mr
Bignell said.

“The peloton will test their legs on a route that takes them over the River Torrens and through Adelaide’s beautiful parklands, with plenty of great vantage points for fans to enjoy the action while perhaps enjoying a picnic by the river.

“For the first time the race will travel past the scenic northern edge of the University of Adelaide.”

People’s Choice Managing Director Peter Evers welcomed the new route and he announced that entry is now open for the People’s Choice Undies Run for Bowel Cancer.

“What a fantastic way to welcome back the world’s best cyclists in 2014, and what a buzz when they hit the city streets for the first time in this beautiful part of Adelaide,” Mr Evers said.

“We’re extremely proud of our association with the Tour, and to once again partner with Cancer Council SA to host the People’s Choice Undies Run for Bowel Cancer which is held before the People’s Choice Classic.”

Cancer Council SA Chief Executive Professor Brenda Wilson said she looked forward to the People’s Choice Undies Run growing in popularity in its new setting.

“The Undies Run is a fun event with a serious message: to raise awareness and funds in the fight against Bowel Cancer,” Professor Wilson said.

“Last year more than 1200 runners and supporters took the dare to run in their undies in front of more than 100,000 spectators, raising over $120,000. We expect these numbers to grow considerably in 2014.”

Santos Tour Down Under Race Director Mike Turtur said the new city route would offer plenty of technical challenges for the riders.

“City stages are always hotly contested and I have no doubt we’ll see plenty of close fights to the finish as the peloton races through central Adelaide,” Mr Turtur said.
