Martin Devlin Joins Fresh Line-Up at Radio Sport

Martin Devlin will return to Radio Sport joining a revitalised line-up in 2014.

The Radio Network (TRN) has announced today that Devlin will become the 9am-12pm host from January 2014.   Devlin will replace long time Radio Sport stalwart, Brendan Telfer, who has decided not to seek a renewal of his contract when it comes up at the end of the year.

Devlin will follow Radio Sport’s all new breakfast show – The Crowd Goes Wild Breakfast – hosted by Andrew Mulligan and Mark Richardson.

General manager Talk Programming for TRN Dallas Gurney says the new breakfast and morning shows will help bring more entertainment factor to Radio Sport.

“While the station is unashamedly hard core sport 24-7, Radio Sport next year will give people a laugh too.”

Devlin says he’s never been happier.

“I just love talking sport so to be back working for Radio Sport is a dream for me. I have loved my time with Hauraki and am stoked that I will still be involved going forward with some regular guest appearances.”

Devlin’s profile is at an all-time high following his time on breakfast at Hauraki, where he will continue to contribute regularly on sporting issues.  While a new Hauraki breakfast show is yet to be announced, Devlin’s current Hauraki co-host Laura McGoldrick will stay at the station.

TRN’s chief content officer Dean Buchanan says he is happy with where Hauraki is at.
“Hauraki is in a good space, with solid growth in its target audience and continual positive feedback, especially on its unique music position. There are some exciting options coming together. 2014 will be a great year.”

Radio Sport is also paying tribute to Brendan Telfer, one of the original hosts when Radio Sport launched 15 years ago. Dallas Gurney says it is the end of an era.

“Brendan’s name is synonymous with sport broadcasting in New Zealand.  He’s interviewed some fascinating athletes over his years and carved a real respect in the world of sport with his knowledge.  He is a true professional and has been our sage.”

Telfer says it’s time for a break and something new.

“This year I recorded my 40th consecutive year in sports broadcasting and I feel ready for some sort of sabbatical and maybe a bit of a change.”
