Reigning event and ASP Women's World Longboard Champion Kelia Moniz got her title defence off to a good start to advance automatically to Round 3 on the opening day the SWATCH GIRLS PRO CHINA 2013 hosted by Wanning. "The first heat is always a tough one to surf, you just want to get it out of the way," said the Hawaiian. "I was happy to get two waves under my belt early on because after that I fell a lot. I'm really excited about the surf this year, it's really pumping out there."

Chelsea Williams, who finished 1st and 2nd in the previous two events also picked up where she'd left off, showing mastery of the conditions early on in the morning to set the performance marker for the day. "I felt really comforta-ble out there, usually I get really nervous in heats but today I found my rhythm easily and kept catching a lot of waves and just had fun."
Swatch Proteam surfer Kassia Meador also advanced to Round 3, but needed the safety net of Round 2 after an uncharacteristic slip up in her first heat. "I guess I chose the wrong board to ride for the conditions and got a bit unlucky this morning. It’s awesome to have good waves and I felt much better in my second heat. I borrowed a board from Yuko Shimajiri and it went much better. The waves are pretty chunky, tricky to read and it can be hard to find a long wall. That was a fun heat though, I'm just happy to make it."
Other surfers to advance automatically from Round 1 with commanding per-formances included France's Justine Dupont, Karina Rozunko and Lindsay Steinriede from the USA and Japan's Hiroka Yoshikawa.
With a marked jump in swell overnight, the surfers were greeted with clean 3-5ft surf peeling across the point break at Riyue Bay, offering long rides with good scoring potential. "When the surf is this solid there's no real decision to make," said contest director Dane Jordan. "We were always going to run all day today when we saw how consistent the sets were. This is the biggest surf we've had to date for the SWATCH GIRLS PRO CHINA, and the forecast looks really promising for the rest of the week too."
