World champion and Olympic medal winning kayaker Ben Fouhy is taking time out to try his hand at Ironman triathlon.

Fouhy, who completed the Bonita Ironman New Zealand event in Taupo on Saturday, has qualified for October’s Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.

He has decided to accept the qualifying spot for Hawaii, and take a year out of his sport to take on one of the world’s great sporting challenges.

Fouhy clocked a highly respectable 9:41:10 for his effort in Saturday’s Ironman New Zealand to finish ninth in the 30-34 years age group. He earned one of the qualifying spots from his age group among the 80 qualifying places for Hawaii up for grabs from the race.

Thirty-five slots were taken up by New Zealanders including Commonwealth Games marathon runner Craig Kirkwood (Tauranga) who won the men’s 35-39 years division and was the fastest age grouper overall in an outstanding 9:09:27 in his Ironman debut.

Kumeu’s Tiare Lund, a multi-world championship medallist, will be heading back to the world championships for the 17th time after winning the women’s 60-64 years age group in a stunning 12:42:35.
