Children throughout New Zealand have a unique opportunity to run and cycle on their local motor racing tracks this summer as part of the Grid Kids Duathlon series.

The series is being run in conjunction with the NZV8 rounds and will see children aged 7-15 run and cycle achievable distances as part of the duathlon.

“For parents who love motor racing, this is a great way to encourage your kids to be active and healthy during summer and each entrant receives free admission for themselves and two adults to the day’s racing – they also are rewarded with a t-shirt, medal, certificate and an autograph signing opportunity with NZV8 drivers,” said Event Director Shanelle Barrett.

“A number of the entrants will be chosen to join the NZV8 drivers and their cars on the grid prior to the start of the NZV8 races!”

Children from Christchurch and Auckland have already enjoyed participating in the programme at the Pukekohe and Ruapuna NZV8 rounds while children in Southland, Timaru, Manfield and Taupo have started training using the online programme at www.gridkids.co.nz. The Grid Kids Duathlon will also be at the Hampton Downs NZV8 round on June 6.

“The children thrive in running and riding under the watchful eyes of the NZV8 drivers, fans, and of course, their families – it encourages children and teens to set goats during the summer months, work towards them and revel in the sense of achievement when they complete the duathlon.”

“Many children dream of being involved in the motorsport industry when they grow up – this is an excellent way for them to also understand that motor racing drivers and pit crew spend hours on their fitness.”

The distances are all achievable and suitable for different age groups and it provides excellent value for money at only $25 for individual entries or $40 for a team.

At each event, a local school with the highest ratio of participants as a percentage of their roll call will win $500 worth of sporting equipment.

“Motor racing is increasingly becoming a family-friendly activity – with the new ‘Downtown Village’ area that features merchandise, driver-signings and food and beverage suppliers, it provides race-goers with off-track entertainment.”
