Success Habits

“Some people dream of success whilst other wake up and work hard at it”.

The common reasons behind successful people’s achievements have always intrigued me and I have read up on so many theories behind this that my head literally spins when trying to bring them all into some kind of order. 7 habits of highly effective people, 10 habits of success; 8 reasons for on going success in business… the information is everywhere and people generally rush to buy it, as if they really have no idea of the answers at all.

On completing my research for my presentations on the subject of “Success Habits” it occurs to me that many of us do have the answers as to how to succeed. The information in the tons of literature on the subject is pretty much the same substance- sometimes presented differently but always the same principals.

Nike had it right when they came out with the slogan “Just do it” and everybody loved this slogan. So why don’t we all “just do it”? It is my opinion that in many cases we just haven’t given dedicated thought as to what we really define as successful or what success means to us. We are often trapped in the rat race of survival, along with an ingrained upbringing that tended to sideline the importance of our “wants” over our “needs”. We need to get in touch with our wants again. Once these wants have been established the basics of achievement are essentially the same for everyone.

Goal setting along with a detailed action plan and a consistent tracking system will take you a long way to where you want to be. It is also important to appreciate that the only person who is responsible for your future, your happiness and your success is yourself.

Absolute ownership of one’s own life success is the one common thread that I have found throughout all the literature on success stories. As soon as you fall into the habit of thinking someone else may be responsible for your successes you are doomed to on going failure and there will always be good reason for these failures – it was simply someone else’s fault. There are a staggering number of people happy with this form of existence. As long as they can apportion the blame externally they do not need to try harder.

I was taught this lesson early in life at nursery school when some (other) snotty nosed little girl in a playground tiff yelled to me that if I was pointing one finger at her, there were 3 pointing back at me. She got a valuable message through to me that day. One I haven’t forgotten and I have no doubt that she would have gone on to do well in her life. If I were required to isolate one habit that is central to individual success it would be the individual’s ability to continually distinguish their absolute responsibility for that success.
