New Zealand Hockey representatives have joined forces to support a new gynaecological cancer campaign, raising money for New Zealand women suffering from the disease.

Both the woman and men Black Stick Olympic teams have stepped in to support the worthy cause prior to heading over to compete in Beijing.

Campaign organiser and cancer patient Shaline Das-Fitzgibbon says although she plans to fight the odds after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2007, most fellow sufferers won’t be so lucky.

Former chairperson of the UK Gynaecological Foundation Karen Cater is managing the fundraiser with Shaline.

“Approximately one woman is dying of gynaecological cancer every 24 hours in New Zealand. More than 80% of woman such as myself who have been diagnosed do not live more than five years,” Das-Fitzgibbon says.

Teaming up with New Zealand Hockey is a natural step for Shaline who has strong ties to hockey.

“One of my uncles played hockey for New Zealand, captaining the team during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and others have played for Auckland. It’s a blessing to have them on board,” she says.

Hockey New Zealand CEO Ramesh Patel admires what Shaline is doing for other cancer sufferers.

“We at New Zealand Hockey are honoured to be supporting Shaline and all the excellent work she is doing. She is a true inspiration,” says Patel.

Gynaecologist oncologist specialist Dr Ai Ling Tan supports Shaline’s campaign and describes how a diagnosis can affect women on many levels.

“Gynaecological cancer has a physical, emotional, financial and social affect on patients. Funds are desperately needed and will make a difference,” she says.

Shaline is the mother of a four year-old son and was a finalist for NZ Families ‘Mother of the year’ award this year having been recognised for her courage and ‘can-do’ attitude.

“It is now my life goal to assist and prevent people going through the heartbreaking journey that myself and my family has gone through,” says Das-Fitzgibbon.

A trade me campaign is being launched that will go live during the Olympics of various trade me auctions including products and services donated by businesses.
