Almost 60 elite and special interest teams applied for the 30 available spots in the Application Category to the Adventure Racing World Championships (ARWC) 2011 in Tasmania, Australia.

Numerous international elite teams were accepted from a wide range of countries including Canada, USA, UK, Norway, Sweden, New Zealand, France, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Many Australian teams were accepted based on outstanding results in domestic races or through having a strong media platform for the event.

Along with the 30 Application spots, teams may also gain an entry to the ARWC 2011 by placing 1st or 2nd at one of the twelve qualifying races in the world series (totalling 24 spots). Many elite teams are planning their racing season with this goal in mind.

XPD Cairns was the first qualifying race and teams Blackheart.com.au (Australia) and Merrell Adventure Addicts (South Africa) have quickly accepted their spots. So too has UK team Adidas Terrex (world champions in 2008), who won the second qualifying race in the UK.

Winners of the 2010 Adventure Racing World Championships in Spain, team Buff Thermocool, have registered and will defend their crown in Tasmania.

All that will be left of the maximum 70 spots available are 20 entries for General Entry opening on 1 Dec 2010. These are open to any team brave enough to face the challenges of an expedition race and the World Championships.

The ARWC is scheduled from 31 October to 11th November 2011 in Tasmania, Australia. 70 teams of four athletes from around the world will race day and night over a 700km course in the disciplines of trekking, kayaking, mountain biking and roping, vying for a share of $75,000 in prize money.

The 2011 Adventure Racing World Championship is supported by the Tasmanian Government through Events Tasmania.
