Burger King takes toys off the menu

Burger King has announced its plans to stop selling toys as part of its kids meal options in New Zealand and stop the television advertising of its kids meals. The change will see toys dropped from kids meals across all 82 of its restaurants - a first for any major burger restaurant chain in New Zealand.

John Hunter, CEO of Burger King New Zealand, says, “We no longer feel it is relevant to include and advertise a plastic toy as part of our kids meal options. We decided some time ago to re-evaluate how we present our kids meals, and as part of our ongoing commitment to the Advertising Standards Authority Children’s Code for Advertising Food, the decision was made to drop toys altogether.”

John Hunter says the move is Burger King’s second major initiative designed to support those customers wanting to make healthier choices, and follows an announcement in August 2014, when it became the first major burger restaurant chain in New Zealand to display the energy content of menu items on menu boards.
