There are now 213 different ethnicities in New Zealand.
A third of women struggle to find the right shade of foundation.

New Zealand has become a truly multi-cultural society, with the 2013 Census identifying 213 different ethnic groups. From the largest groups (New Zealand European, Maori, Chinese, Samoan and Indian) to the smallest (such as Chamorro, Corsican and Inuit), women are driving a growing demand for make-up as diverse as their skin tones.

Yet research shows that most beauty brands aren’t keeping up, with ranges that are still far too limited. In a Glamour US survey, for example, 30% of readers said they can never find the right shade of foundation for their skin tone. Experts agree that wearing the wrong foundation is one of the most common beauty mistakes women make.

Kryolan has one of the widest ranges of foundation colours in New Zealand

Kryolan, the world’s number one professional make-up brand, has the widest range of foundation colours available in New Zealand: 340 in total, across 17 different ranges. Unlike other brands, the Berlin-based Kryolan make their own make-up, using photo spectrometers to measure and monitor skin shade colours with pinpoint accuracy.

Midge Holding has been a professional TV and film make-up artist for 38 years, and owns Kryolan boutiques in Auckland and Christchurch. She says a substantial number of her customers are coming to Kryolan specifically because they can’t find the right shade of foundation anywhere else.

“40% of Auckland’s population is now made up of different ethnicities. Darker skins in particular have long been under-served, with limited ranges of colours. Kryolan is changing all that. We have 340 colour-true foundation shades, so we can provide the perfect match for any and every skin tone. Our best selling foundation is Ultra Cream Foundation which is suitable for most skin types except very oily.”

Midge’s tips for choosing the right foundation:
  • Unless you know exactly what you need, do not purchase online.
  • Decide on what sort of coverage you want and discuss your options with an expert in makeup, Kryolan City Auckland employ fully qualified makeup Artists.
  • Never try and match your foundation colour by testing on your hand, wrist etc. the foundation must be tested on face, preferably along the jawline. Your hand can be a completely different colour and texture to your face.
  • Check the colour test in natural daylight; it should blend into your natural skin colour.
  • The perfect foundation for everyday wear should look natural and blend out uneven skin tones making the skin look flawless, it should not look like a mask.
  • Always wear a Primer under your foundation.
  • If you have sensitive skin ask to have the foundation applied and wear it for a day before buying to ensure it does not react with your skin.
  • If redness is a problem, use a yellow based neutraliser under your foundation
  • Your skin can change with the seasons and as you age, so what suits you now may not always be the perfect choice for the future.
