Napier Recycling Day coming up

Do you have any toys, tools or reusable timber taking up space at your home?

Come down to Anderson Park for Napier’s annual Recycling Day between 8am and 1pm on Saturday 7 November and you can drop these items off for free.

You may also buy any items for a donation. Recycling Day, at the Freyberg Avenue side of Anderson Park, is organised by the Keep Napier Beautiful committee – all volunteers – assisted by City of Napier cadets and Napier City Council staff.

“Recycling Day provides an opportunity for people to get rid of useable household items and pick up others cheaply.  All money collected is given back to the community in $500 grants to groups who need funding for a beautification project,” said Keep Napier Beautiful chairperson Maxine Boag.

The purpose of the day is to promote waste minimisation, divert waste which would ordinarily end up at the Omarunui landfill, and raise money for the grants. Application forms for the grants, which are available to different organisations such as schools, marae, environment or community groups to buy plants, or garden materials to help with projects, are also available on the Council website.

Site marshals are allowed to ask for a more generous donation before allowing someone to take an item of a clearly higher value, and also have the right to refuse to accept material that is not recyclable or reusable.

Only items dropped off between 8am and 1pm will be accepted. To see the full list of what is allowed, and what isn’t, go to www.napier.govt.nz keyword #keepnapierbeautiful.

The Keep Napier Beautiful programme was established in 1994 as a pro-active partnership between Council and the community.

The main idea of the programme is to promote community involvement and participation in activities which protect and/or beautify Napier.

Past Keep Napier Beautiful projects include the gardens around the Westshore clock and at the National Aquarium of New Zealand, the seats across from the Centennial Gardens, and being involved in Clean Up NZ Day.

For anyone needing to get rid of hazardous waste, the annual Hazmobile hazardous household waste collection will run between 10am and 2pm on Sunday 8 November at Eastern Truck and Marine, Austin Street, Napier.

This is run by the Hawke’s Bay Regional, Hastings District and Napier City Councils.
