The ASB Auckland Marathon has raised around $1 million for charity from its event earlier this month..

Organisers are delighted at the level of funds raised, in the third year of its charity initiative with the Realbuzz Group, who manage the programme around the world. It is based on their model developed for the highly successful London Marathon model.

“Marathons around the world have incorporated the raising of money for charity as a key element and we are absolutely delighted with the development of this important element in the ASB Auckland Marathon,” said Jane Patterson, COO of IRONMAN Asia-Pacific, the Marathon owner.

“Our partners in this initiative work with leading charities around New Zealand as well as further afield on the Golden Charity programme.

“We are very happy with the progress so far at the ASB Auckland Marathon and ultimately we would love to see every runner do a little for a charity and raise millions of dollars for good causes throughout the country and beyond.”

There were 31 official charity partners in the programme this year with more than 1000 participants in the ASB Auckland Marathon competing for charities.

The organisers said a number of competitors had close affiliations with their causes, which also acted as an incentive for them to become active and fit to participate.
