Marae hosting free family event

Children’s entertainment and a ki-o-rahi competition are part of the second annual Waitangi celebrations supported by the Napier City Council this year.

Pukemokimoki Marae is hosting the free family event, beginning at 10am on Saturday 30 January and running over the next four hours. It is being held the weekend before Waitangi Day so it does not clash with established events on the day itself, such as Kahungunu Waitangi Day at the Hawke’s Bay Regional Sports Park.

There will be a demonstration of ki-o-rahi, a traditional Maori sport, and a competition for those willing to give it a go. Marae coordinator Angela Houkamau said the best way to describe it to people who had never come across it before was to picture a game that combined basketball and touch rugby.

“Ki-o-rahi adds another dimension to our family day, which worked so well last year,” said Angela. 



Ropata Hepi will also host two free interactive workshops, between 10.30-11.30am, and 12.30-1.30pm. The first will cover some of the history and key events leading to the establishment of the marae, while youngsters aged seven and up can take part in a ‘Whare Nui Challenge’ and a hands on activity.

The afternoon session, aimed at people aged 15 and over, will include discussing the Treaty of Waitangi and its relevance to today, and the creation of a community art piece.

There will also be live music, stalls and food available, including a delicious hangi.

The events mark the 176th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
