Around 100 international students were given a real Kiwi welcome yesterday at a function at the Hamilton City Council civic reception lounge.

Following a mihi by Kaumatua Tame Pokaia, the students were entertained by a kapa haka performance by Hamilton-based group Taiohi Manawataki and enjoyed kiwiana-type refreshments before having the chance to have their photo taken with Mayor Julie Hardaker.

The Mayor told the students that she was sure they would enjoy their time in New Zealand and especially the Waikato because of the many opportunities open to them.

“There is so much to do, see, and enjoy as well as getting a high quality education.”

Mayor Hardaker says international students have become a major contributor to the local economy as well as bringing vibrancy to the communities where they are studying.

“It’s a two way street,” the Mayor said. “You learn about our ways and your fellow Kiwi students have a chance to understand your cultures.”

More than 3000 international students are in the Waikato each year and they are well supported by Waikato Education International, an umbrella group representing the many institutions serving the international education market.

Responding on behalf of the students, Cambridge High pupil Pearlie Chan Rou San said “Kiwis are the most amazing, lovely, friendly and welcoming people that you will ever meet.”

From Malaysia, she also described New Zealand’s educational system is amazing. “Here, I have the opportunity to choose the subjects I enjoy and like. It means a lot to me because I get to enjoy what I love and I can truly focus on what I really want to study.”

Pearlie urged her fellow students to get out and explore New Zealand’s stunning scenery.

“Hamilton is a gorgeous town to live in. It has a few beautiful places that are worth a visit especially Hamilton Gardens.”

Waikato Education International president Shirley Huang told the gathering that she is always amazed by the passion and determination of the young students.

“It is no surprise that international students often go on to very successful careers either in NZ, their home countries or internationally. We are very proud of what our international students have achieved and offer the world.”

In the classroom domestic and international students together benefit from exposure to other cultures and perspectives which enables them to develop global understanding.

International students also act as ambassadors for NZ.
