Anglers and their families have been reminded that time is running out to enter Fish for Gold – and try and hook a green-tagged trout worth $10,000 in one of three Rotorua lakes.

The deadline for entries is midnight today (September 30) and the promotion is limited to the first 1200 who enter.

Anglers who qualify have nine full days to try and catch the “big money fish” between October 1 and October 9, 2016.

Fish & Game Eastern Region Manager Andy Garrick says get in quick and enter “so you don’t have the disappointment of catching a green tagged fish – but hadn’t got around to entering.”

Entry is free if you hold a new season licence and register online and meet the conditions, "so it’s a simple case of ‘be in to win,’” Mr Garrick says.

“And we remind people that everyone who catches a green tag trout is a winner because everyone of these fish has a prize associated with it.”

Fish & Game has received hundreds of entries but there is a way to go to reach the 1200 entries cut-off, he says.

“Saturday will be a real family day with school holidays in progress so Fish for Gold adds some real fun and suspense factors to people’s day out on the water.”

The promotion centres on 30 green tagged fish which have been put, ten apiece, into lakes Tarawera, Rotoiti and Okataina.

Anglers will easily recognise one of these fish – the tags are prominent and the fish are healthy catchable specimens around 35-45cm long.

Numbers on the tags correspond to prizes contained in sealed and numbered envelopes and one of them contains the grand prize of $10,000.

The other envelopes each contain a $200 tackle or voucher prize.
