Australia’s anti-ageing doctor, Dr Elstein, says this Easter we should avoid stocking up on hot cross buns, an Easter favourite, as eating gluten could be setting us up to develop obesity and dementia.

Despite recent advice that we need to be eating gluten as a fibre source, after research surfaced that gluten free diets are associated with weight gain and possibly diabetes, Dr Elstein warns that this is questionable counsel and states gluten is less healthy than cardboard, explaining that gluten is a non-digestible substance with no nutritional value.

Gluten can cause gut inflammation' cautions Dr Elstein and we can get all the fibre we need from vegetables and fruit. ‘We don't need to consume bread, cereal, pasta, biscuits and cakes to obtain fibre.’ Dr Elstein said.

Research into the claims that gut inflammation caused by foods high in gluten are characteristic of a broad spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases that can manifest into dementia, support Dr Elstein’s warning that this Easter we should ditch the buns.

Dr Elstein, who is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Anti-Ageing Medicine, runs Bondi’s Eternal Health Medical Centre, and specialises in anti-aging.
