Those who missed out registering online for the 35th Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge don’t need to panic – late entries will be available for the iconic Lake Taupo cycle event at the Great Lake Centre from 10am–10pm Friday 25th November and 6am–8am on Saturday 26th November (the day of the event).

Organisers are expecting approximately 9,000 entrants this year with over 350 international entrants and 100 Endurance riders.  Numbers are slightly down on last year, which is in line with other major events across Australasia.

“With Rugby World Cup 2011 and Elections, we were expecting our numbers to be impacted.  However, it is shaping up to be another great day and the positive side for entrants is there are more chances to win some of our fantastic spot prizes,” said Event Director Kay Brake.

Major spot prizes this year include a brand new SsangYong Korando SPR, a cruise on ‘Rhapsody of the Sea’ from Singapore to Sydney, a Traillite Campervan Holiday, Placemakers trailers, the Contact Yike Bike and Avanti road and mountain bikes.

This year the Cycle Challenge clashes with a later than usual Election Day.  The Taupo Electorate Office has requested all entrants travelling to Taupo for Cycle Challenge, vote before they leave home to avoid having to queue to make a special vote.  There will be facilities available in Taupo but with the huge number of extra voters in town there could be queues.

The Contact Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge brings over 20,000 visitors to Lake Taupo annually and motorists are kindly reminded to take extra care on the roads with the influx of cyclists.
