Young New Zealand sportspeople who aspire to be the next generation of Kiwi sports stars, now have the rare opportunity to receive one-on-one mentoring from some of New Zealand’s top athletes and experts, following an announcement by Powerade that it is set to launch its first Powerade Breakthrough Academy on July 29 of this year.

The Powerade Breakthrough Academy will enable 10 aspiring sportspeople to attend an immersive one-day session run by Nic Gill, the All Blacks strength and conditioning coach, and will feature an appearance by breakthrough basketball athlete Steven Adams, as well as three All Blacks players, all of whom will spend time mentoring the attendees and answering questions.

“We encourage anyone who wants to pursue a career in sport to apply. To date there is nothing quite like this opportunity in New Zealand, and we couldn’t be more excited to be behind this programme”, says Tracey Evans, Marketing Manager, Stills at Coca-Cola Oceania.

Those chosen to be the final 10 attendees will undergo a combination of physical training and classroom tuition, with a focus on goal setting and planning, training techniques, nutrition and hydration, as well as long term athlete development.

The Powerade Academy is open to up-and-coming athletes, aged 13 or older, from across the country and applicants will be measured on the level of competition they have competed at, their career goals and sporting achievements so far.

“This is the first year that we will have run this programme, and we can’t wait to see what it leads to. There are so many young athletes who showcase great potential and we want to be able to give them a chance to leverage an opportunity like this and go on to achieve great things”, says Evans.
