The shared dream of world champion surfer Sofia Mulanovich and Swatch, to create a surfing academy to give young Peruvian talent direct access to the ocean’s opportunities, became reality today. At the launch of this unique youth surfing project, 10 high-potential kids and their families gathered in the Proyecto Sofia Mulanovich “beach house” in Punta Hermosa, to show media their determination to chase and live their dreams. The Proyecto Sofia Mulanovich is a three-year program that combines top-level, competitive surf training with life lessons anchored in the key areas of environmental protection, healthy living and fair play. The 10 residents were selected from 67 hopeful applicants by Sofia Mulanovich and her team of experts.

At the official opening of the “beach house”, Sofia expressed her pride at this initiative to give Peruvian kids from all regions and background the chance to make themselves, their individual communities and potentially their country, extremely proud. ”My aim is to give the Proyecto members the very best support, through my team, so they can grow and develop and seize life’s opportunities”. As an established supporter of professional women’s surfing, and with a strong belief that the oceans are for everyone, Swatch is the ideal partner for the Proyecto Sofia Mulanovich. “Swatch has always harnessed the power of sport to dissolve barriers and open up new horizons for athletes and audiences. We believe the planet belongs to everyone, so this project is a win-win - making the ocean accessible to young surfing talent and at the same time strengthening their sense of environmental protection, healthy living and fair play,” explained Carlo Giordanetti, Swatch Creative Director.

Just two months ago, the Proyecto Sofia Mulanovich conducted four searching days to recruit 15 potential residents, aged from 10 to 15, for the new academy. This group then attended a tough scouting camp to fight for the 10 available places for the full program. The “beach house” offers world-class facilities, totally fitting for a country that boasts some of the planet’s best waves. Training out on the beach and waves will be interspersed with workshops back at base using video footage to analyze and then perfect technique and style. All of the academy’s activities run parallel to formal schooling. The focus is 100% on enabling the kids to emerge as both skilled surfers with competitive potential and as rounded individuals equipped to apply the life skills learned to have a positive impact.
