It’s nearly D-Day for the Million Dollar Snapper Challenge, with thousands of anglers hitting the harbours of Auckland for the final weekend.

Some particularly keen anglers have been on the water since the comp opened last Friday, with hundreds of pictures flooding in through the Million Dollar Snapper App despite challenging weather conditions.

There’s good news though – this weekend the weather will improve with fine conditions and light winds predicted for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, ending the 10-day competition with a bang.

If you’re wondering where to fish over the weekend, look no further. According to NZ Fishing World, snapper are moving out towards the edge of the Hauraki Gulf, feeding for several hours a day in deeper water, so start your outboards and get ready for a good chase!

“We’ve had hundreds of snapper submissions flooding in throughout the competition period,” said event creator Dave Baty.

“With great weather coming up this weekend, it’s the perfect time to go fishing and be in with a chance to win some great prizes, including the opportunity to walk away with $one million dollars in cash, on the spot! It’s going to be an awesome prizegiving, and you’d be mad to miss it.”

The prizegiving will take place at 5pm on the 31st of May at the Mangere Bridge Tavern. Up for grabs are a Honda Marine/Fyran 550/Isuzu D-Max Ute Package worth $120,000, $10,000 worth of bathroom renovations from Mico and Rheem, Shimano fishing gear, Viking Replay Kayaks, NZ Fishing News subscriptions, Furuno Fish Finders, Smart Saver Wet Electronics Rescue Bags and more.

A range of these prizes will go to the longest overall fish, as well as those closest to pre-selected mystery lengths.

At the Mangere Bride Tavern, 10 attendees will be drawn out to come on stage and play a game of ‘last man standing’ until there’s one person left. That person will select one snapper picture from a wall of 100 images to reveal their prize.

Behind 99 of the images will be the Isuzu D-Max Ute/Fyran 550, Honda Marine, Hoskings Trailer prize package. Behind one other will be a $1million prize, payable in cash to the winner.

“This is the biggest prize pool of any fishing competition in New Zealand, ever,” said Baty.

“We’ve already had a huge event this year, watch this become a massive event in years to come,” he said.
